James Balk’s illustrious journey in high school baseball spans an impressive 61 years in Delaware County, where his dedication and impact have shaped the lives of countless young athletes. A revered figure in the sport, James spent 40 of those years as the varsity coach at Radnor High School. During his remarkable tenure, he amassed 465 wins, standing as the second-most victories in Delaware County history, a testament to his skillful leadership and commitment to excellence.

Beyond his coaching accolades, James’s contributions to the community are equally commendable. He was inducted into the Delaware County Sports Hall of Fame, where he received recognition not only for his achievements as a coach but also for his humanitarian efforts. His commitment to social justice and community service earned him the Chester NAACP Freedom Award, and he proudly holds a place in the Upper Darby High School Wall of Fame.

James’s influence extends into professional baseball; he served as a Mid-Atlantic player evaluator for the Pittsburgh Pirates for four years, helping to nurture talent from the region. Additionally, he founded the Chester Delco Semi-Pro Baseball Team, providing opportunities for local athletes to hone their skills and further their careers in the sport.

His vision for community sports facilities is evident in his dedication to constructing state-of-the-art football and baseball fields at the Chester High School sports complex, where he was responsible for obtaining most of the financial contributions to help build them, ensuring that future athletes have access to high-quality resources for training and competition. Notably, he also served as the pitching coach for the 2018 Marple Newtown state championship team, guiding them to a historic victory as the only Delaware County baseball team to ever achieve a state championship title.

In addition to his baseball accomplishments, James has made significant contributions to education and youth development. He was a distinguished varsity basketball coach at Valley Forge Military Academy and took initiatives to enrich students’ lives beyond sports. He organized and financed field trips for Chester High School students to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., ensuring that they learn the importance of history and compassion. Furthermore, he created the annual youth symposium on the Holocaust for students from Philadelphia and its suburbs at St. Joseph’s University, fostering awareness and understanding among the next generation.
